Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

The Kenai Peninsula, located to the south of Anchorage, is renowned for its natural beauty and its lovely, smaller towns and cities that thrive on community spirit and their uniqueness.

Although a little farther away than some may prefer—living in the Kenai Peninsula is just the thing many others want out of life—peacefulness and opportunity. The places that make Kenai Peninsula so special to those who call it home thrive on economies centered on commercial fishing, tourism and natural resources.

The four seasons of weather in the Kenai Peninsula are perfect for nearly every kind of outdoor enthusiast—mild summers and fairly warm winters with January temperatures ranging from 6-24 degrees Fahrenheit and July temperatures ranging from 45-66 degrees Fahrenheit. Below you will find additional information about some of the areas, each served by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. If you have any additional questions about real estate in the Kenai Peninsula, the Kathy J Fernandez Team would be happy to help you!

Soldotna

As the Kenai Peninsula experienced rapid growth between the 1970’s and 1980’s, Soldotna established itself as the center of services for the rest of the area. Today, Soldotna’s population of nearly 4,000 residents have easy access to the administrative headquarters of the Kenai Peninsula Borough and the Central Peninsula General Hospital. Bordering the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and just 140 miles from Anchorage, Soldotna is far enough away from Alaska’s largest city to retain a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, yet close enough for Anchorage residents to cause the population the population of the entire Borough to nearly double when they come to enjoy the area’s many fine fishing and other outdoor activities during the summer.

Kenai

Located where the Cook Inlet meets the Kenai River, Kenai is famous for its world-class King Salmon fishing. The popularity of Kenai, located 160 miles form Anchorage, has caused its population to grow an average of 8 percent since 2000, boosting its current number of residents to nearly 8,000. Drawn by much more than just the outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities, Kenai’s population growth is also due to its vibrant economy based in industries such as natural gas, oil and commercial fishing. Kenai residents also have access to modern medical and emergency services both in Kenai and the nearby Soldotna. Kenai’s cost of living is well below national and state levels and median home prices are approximately $180,000.

Homer

Resting along the shore of Kachemak Bay, the nearly 5,000 residents of Homer enjoy stunning views of glaciers and the Kenai Mountains, with wildlife as a constant companion. Of note in Homer is the Homer Spit, jutting 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay, which plays home to over 700 commercial and charter boat operators whose number grows to over 1,500 in the summer. Homer’s location has lent itself to becoming the hub of the Southern Kenai Peninsula’s commercial and transportation hub and as a commercial harvest and fish processing economy. Homer also features the amenities of a small city, including medical clinics, a hospital, pharmacies, the Kenai Peninsula College and many senior citizens centers.

Seldovia

Seldovia’s location in the southwestern area of the Kenai Peninsula and Seldovia Bay, 16 miles southwest of Homer and across the lovely Kachemak Bay, has long attracted tourists who long to become full-time residents. Both commercial and sport fishing have provided the base for the local economy and attracting tourists to this town of less than 300 people. Although small in population, Seldovia offers its residents an amazing community atmosphere where even the Main Street is popular for pedestrians, vehicles and ATVs. As a remote area, accessible only by airplane or boat, the community of Seldovia is very close, making living here like joining a large family.
